2001 European Championships

Winkler/Lohse finish 6th at Europeans
Kati Winkler/Rene Lohse finished 6th at Europeans in
Bratislava. They put in a hard fight for the fifth place, but
they skated in the penultimate flight, while their main competitors,
the Israelian couple Galit Chait/Sergei Sakhnovski, skated in
the last. Kati and Rene skated their Free Dance set to Gospel
songs in an excellent manner. They had changed the last part
of the program, making it more upbeat and faster. Their dance
really benefits from the changes. The audience supported them
all the way through. "Today, I was totally on. I saw everyone
in the audience, and that's always a good sign", Kati said.
"We put in the new part about three or four weeks ago. We are
very happy with the changes we've made in our program. I think
we improved since last year. We always want to do something
new and different in our programs." They said that they are
not disappointed about losing the 5th place to the Israelian
team.
Winkler/Lohse received marks from 5.2 to 5.5 for technique and
from 5.5 to 5.7 for presentation. They got one fourth place
ordinal (from the German judge), one 5th place (USA) and one
7th place (UKR). The remaining judges had them 6th.
Winkler/Lohse sixth in the OD
Kati Winkler/Rene Lohse finished sixth in the OD on
Thursday (January 25) at Europeans in Bratislava. Their funny
Charleston and Quickstep was marred only by a minor insecurity
when Kati's cap almost came loose. "I had to put it back, and
that made Rene nervous. He lost a bit concentration. This was
just such a moment. Additionally, I had to change my stockings,
because I realized during the warm up that I couldn’t really
move in them. It was somewhat hectic, and this affects you of
course", she explained. Winkler/Lohse's marks ranged from 5.3
to 5.6 for composition and from 5.4 to 5.7 for presentation.
They got one fourth place ordinal from the US judge and two
fifth places (EST, RUS), while the rest of the judges put them
sixth (SVK, BUL, ITA, JPN, AUS, FRA).
