Winkler/Lohse finish 5th at Europeans in Malmö
Kati Winkler/Rene Lohse finished 5th at the 2003 European
Championships in Malmö, thus fulfilling their minimum goal for
this event. "Our goal was to be in the final warm up group,
and that's what we achieved", the skaters said.
They were ranked fifth from the first part of the competition,
the Tango Romantica Compulsory Dance. Their Tango was solid
and very distinct. As usual, the couple especially sparkled
in the Original Dance. They had the audience behind them right
from the start, clapping along to their March and Polka rhythms.
Their Free Dance "Energy" to a selection of modern music started
very well. Winkler/Lohse put out an energetic, fast and strong
performance. Unfortunaly, Rene fell right before going into
the final diagonal footwork in the last minute of the program.
The couple missed most of the step sequence due to the fall
and received a deduction in the first mark. However, the judges
awarded high presentation marks. "My timing wasn't right, and
then a fall like this can happen", Rene explained. Of course,
the skaters were very upset about the mistake and will do everything
to avoid it in the future.
