Winkler/Lohse finish 6th at Worlds
Kati Winkler/Rene Lohse finished 6th at Worlds and
improved last year's placement (7th). Unlike as at Europeans,
they were beaten by the Israelian team Galit Chait/Sergei Sakhnovski.
In the OD, the Germans lost in a split decision to the Israelians
and had the huge disadvantage to skate in the next to last group.
But their "Time goes Millennium" program was a crowd favorite,
and they skated it with a lot of power and emotion. "This is
the best we've skated this program this season", they said.
"The free dance was our strongest part of the competition, and
we both were right on", said a delighted Kati. "We both felt
great." Rene added: "We knew we would do well today. I was totally
relaxed, it was like in practice. We had nothing to lose. I
rarely feel as good before and after a program!"
Both skaters appreciated the support of the crowd. "I felt like
at home, in Berlin", Rene laughed. "The audience was great,
this helped a lot and gave us confidence", Kati explained.
The marks were as high as 5.6 for technique and 5.7 for presentation,
and Winkler/Lohse lost just in a split decision 4 to 5 to Chait/Sakhnovski.
Their OD on Thursday afternoon went also well, but again,
the panel of judges wasn't a favorable one. There was no German
judge. The skaters were happy with how they skated and didn't
make mistakes.
Now Kati and Rene will try to prepare a new exhibition program
for the Germany tour that starts next week.
Winkler/Lohse 5th after compulsories at Worlds
Kati Winkler/Rene Lohse finished 5th in the compulsories
Tuesday (March 28) at Worlds in Nice, France. They placed 5th
in both dances - the Waltz and the Tango. Their Vienniese Waltz
had flow, speed and looked effortless. Then, in the Tango, Rene
stumbled at the beginning, but the team recovered quickly and
continued without any further mistakes.
The judges were divided and awarded fourth to sixth place ordinals
in the Waltz and fifth to seventh place ordinals for the Tango.
The marks went as high up as 5.6 in the first and 5.5 for the
second dance.
"Rene caught an edge in one of the tracings of the other couples.
This can happen. We got back on track quickly and still did
well", said Kati Winkler. "The Waltz went really well, we showed
what we can do." Kati was happy that the Waltz was drawn, because
she was able to wear her green Waltz costume. "It is the most
expensive costume I have", she said. "It costed 2 800 DM (about
1 400 US$) although I bought it second hand from a ballroom
dancer."
The couple hopes to stay in fifth, which would be their best
placement ever at Worlds. "But it will be a hard fight", Kati
observed. "We'll fight for this fifth place everyday", Rene
added.
