Winkler/Lohse 7th after compulsories at Worlds
Kati Winkler/Rene Lohse placed 7th in the compulsory dances
at the 2002 World Figure Skating Championships in Nagano, Japan
(Tuesday, March 19). The dances were the Golden Waltz and the
Quickstep. Winkler/Lohse looked a bit hesitant in the Waltz,
but their Quickstep was very strong. The ordinals were mixed
in both dances, ranging from 5th to 8th in the Waltz and from
6th to 8th in the Quickstep. The skaters were somewhat disappointed
with their marks.
"We are pleased with what we've done today, but of course we
had hoped for a better placement", Kati said. "I was a bit upset,
to be frank. But there is nothing we can do about it." Rene
added: "We had a lot of speed and we had fun out there. We will
try everything to move up, we will continue to fight, and we
are looking forward to Thursday (OD)."
Winkler/Lohse finish 7th at Worlds
Kati Winkler/Rene Lohse finished 7th at Worlds, although many
observers felt that they deserved a higher placement. Kati and
Rene were ranked 7th in both the OD and FD. Their OD was excellent,
and the FD was also skated very well. The skaters had changed
the first part of their "Ragtime" program to make it stronger,
and the changes worked. It was obvious that their programs had
more mileage since the Olympics and the dancers appeared to
be much more confident. They were both very pleased with the
way they skated and tried not to think about the judging too
much.
